A principios del año 2023, la leyenda del tenis Martina Navratilova, de 66 años, anunció que había sido diagnosticada de dos tipos de cáncer, uno de mama y otro de garganta originado por el virus del papiloma humano. En Estados Unidos, cada año son diagnosticados alrededor de 3500 casos nuevos de cánceres orofaríngeos asociados con el virus del papiloma humano en mujeres y 16200 en hombres. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), alrededor del 5 % de los cánceres son provocados por infecciones del virus del papiloma humano. Pues sí, por desgracia, algunos microorganismos tienen un profundo impacto en la patogénesis del cáncer. De hecho, casi el 20 % de los cánceres malignos en humanos están relacionados con infecciones microbianas, incluidas bacterias, parásitos y virus. Tenga en cuenta, que el cáncer, no es una sola enfermedad, sino muchas, provocadas por el crecimiento sin control de una única célula. En 2020, casi 10 millones de personas murieron de cáncer, cifra que se espera aumente a 16,3 millones para 2040.
